Cyclamen location: 8 important criteria

In terms of light, you have to choose the location depending on whether it is a cyclamen in the room or in the garden. The warmer it is, the brighter it should be positioned. In the room, for example, a south-facing window is ideal. Outdoors, on the other hand, the location of the cyclamen should be half-shady to shady.

It is therefore ideal to place the plants near a hedge or wall, for example, and avoid the south side.

The cyclamen location should be as cool as possible. Temperatures between 12 and 15 °C are ideal. Therefore, the plants should not be in the warm living room in winter, but in the hallway, bedroom or bathroom, for example. However, care should be taken to ensure that the violets are kept frost-free and that the temperatures are as constant as possible.

For this reason, close proximity to the heating system should be avoided, as should draughty areas.

Earth

Cyclamen need a permeable, but evenly moist soil. A large proportion of humus is an advantage. In sinks or closed pots, care should be taken to ensure adequate drainage. This can be introduced, for example, through a layer of gravel or broken pottery under the roots or at the bottom of the pot.

Since the soil should always remain moist but not wet, a number of factors must be taken into account when choosing the location. Below:

• do not choose a sink without drainage
• Proximity to ponds and other bodies of water is not ideal
• Avoid soil that tends to solidify

Since these are poisonous plants that can cause serious health problems even in small doses, the plants should be kept out of the reach of pets and children. Parts of plants that are torn off or pieces that are ingested orally – for example from small children or rabbits, guinea pigs, cats or dogs – are fatal from a weight-dependent dose. For adults, about eight grams are enough.

For smaller and lighter creatures, the amount is correspondingly lower. Therefore, care should be taken when planting the violets.

mixed culture

With the cyclamen location, one should note that the plant does not thrive well with all other plants in the immediate vicinity. Optimal species for mixed cultures include:

• chrysanthemums
• ivy
• Fetthenne
• Winterweide

If there is sufficient distance to other plants, you can of course also combine other plant species with them. However, the plants mentioned are best suited for planting in tubs.

If the violet no longer thrives properly or a wrong planting place was chosen, a change of location is advisable. If the cyclamen is cultivated in a pot, this measure is very simple. As long as the appropriate temperatures are maintained, a gradual adjustment is not necessary. Large temperature differences, however, make a gradual change necessary.

If you have placed the plants outdoors, you must observe the following procedure:

1. The plants can be transplanted in autumn and spring. However, spring after the flowering period is more suitable.
2. In order not to damage the tubers and roots, you should dig at least 20 better 30 centimeters deep and keep a distance of about ten centimeters from the plant.
3. After digging up, the soil is carefully removed from the tuber. It can also be rinsed to remove residue from the substrate. This approach reduces the risk of diseases and parasites.
4. If necessary, the tuber can be divided directly and thus propagated. After division, the cut surfaces should be allowed to dry before replanting.
5. At the new cyclamen location, the tubers are put back into planting holes about ten centimeters deep and watered if the soil is not already sufficiently moist.
