When gardening, many gardeners not only trust the weather forecast, but also the moon. The full moon in particular is said to have a certain influence on various activities in the garden. If you also want to convince yourself of this, you should not ignore our full moon calendar for 2021.

Full moon influence on gardening
It should be noted in advance that the influence of the full moon on gardening is not a question of belief, but has been tried out by countless (hobby) gardeners, compared and confirmed by the results. However, it should also be mentioned that not everyone recognizes/notices an influence. To date, no evidence has been found in science that confirms an actual full moon influence and at the same time explains in detail what it looks like. Nevertheless, it should not be dismissed as humbug, because, as already mentioned: there are (hobby) gardeners who swear by it.
facts of the past
Farmers used to be just as dependent on weather conditions as they are today. However, at that time there were no weather forecasts on TV, so when planning gardening and field work, they primarily oriented themselves to animal behavior patterns and the phases of the moon. Today it has been proven that the moon, like the sun, has an influence on life on earth – so why not also on plants? Over the years, farmers and hobby gardeners have gained experience from which rules have been developed, which primarily relate to sowing, harvesting, pruning and transplanting plants in connection with the full moon.
Mondphasen
On average, the moon takes 29.5 days to orbit the earth. Viewed from the same vantage point, the moon shows different light patterns during this time. In principle, these are divided into four main cycles:
Waxing moon phase
This phase begins when the moon has reached its minimum size in the form of a very slender crescent and then slowly but continuously visibly increases in “mass”.
full moon phase
If the moon has reached its maximum circular shape after the waxing moon phase, it is called full moon. He is on one side of the earth while opposite on the other side is the sun. The number of full moons per year varies. In 2021 there will be exactly 12, one each month.
Waning moon phase
After the full moon, the “mass” decreases again until the moon has reached the minimum size. In the early morning it can often still be seen as a crescent after daybreak, provided the weather conditions allow the moon to be observed.
new moon
A special phenomenon is offered with the new moon. The moon lies between the sun and the earth and is therefore not visible. Like full moons, new moons occur every month and sometimes twice in a month.

Full Moon Calendar – Gardening Planning
Thursday, January 28, 2021 – 8:16:13 p.m
There is little to no gardening in January because the ground is frozen, many garden plants are dormant and because most of the time it is simply too cold for gardening. Nevertheless, some work is worth doing as long as there is no frost and you have planted hardy roses in the garden or on the balcony. Compost can also benefit from the full moon. Here’s what you should do:
- Prune or prune roses
- Thinning out shrub and bed roses
- Turn over/turn over and aerate compost heaps because microorganisms/soil creatures are now very active
- Compost fertilization where it was not done in the fall
Saturday 27 February 2021 – 09:17:19
Early February is still mostly wintry cold, but the bright light of the full moon should be used to plant the first seed and slowly support plants for the onset of spring.
- Spread cold-germinating seeds of ornamental and grass plants
- Plant early winter/frost hardy foliage and flowering plants outside in frost-free soil
- Mulchen
- First fertilization of the year can begin
Sunday, March 28, 2021 – 8:48:10 p.m
The first plants are slowly waking up from “hibernation”. Now is the ideal time in the full moon calendar to do the following gardening work:
- Creation of new garden beds
- Compost fertilization of garden beds
- Nutrient fertilization of fruit trees
- Sowing of above-ground vegetables such as broad beans
Tuesday, April 27, 2021 – 05:31:32
If you don’t want to wait until after the ice saints to plant and sow, you can use this day in the full moon calendar to do so. Ideally, the temperatures are already mild and long-lasting frost is no longer to be expected. Other jobs are also available:
- Strawberry and rhubarb plants, berry bushes can be planted and sown
- Aerate/scarify the lawn
- well drilling
Wednesday 26th May 2021 – 1:13:52 p.m
The gardening season is almost open. If the weather and temperatures allow it, some ornamental and useful plants will now be planted and repotted. If unscheduled late frost forms, covering with fleece, for example, is recommended. Which plants should be planted and transplanted and which other tasks can still be done can be read below.
- Oregano, Majoran, Melisse
- Sow runner beans, cucumbers, squash, Brussels sprouts, celery, broccoli
- Plant rhododendrons and azaleas
- Provide deciduous trees with nutrient fertilizer
- Rearrange or turn over compost again and aerate
Thursday, June 24, 2021 – 8:39:41 p.m
June means harvest time for many home growers. The harvest on the days of the full moon calendar promises significantly more aroma and juiciness. But cutting some types of plants is now also advantageous.
- Harvest field beans and strawberries
- Harvest the dill, oregano and parsley and use them fresh because they are now very aromatic
- Medicinal herbs are most effective now
- Hedge trimming and pruning of early flowering shrubs recommended one or two days after the start of the full moon
Saturday 24 July 2021 – 04:36:53
The garden is now in the middle of the season and maintenance is particularly important. Pests are particularly busy this month. The full moon phase is ideal for promising control, especially since small amounts of control agents are sufficient. Your gardening plan should include:
- Pest control around two to three days after the beginning of the full moon
- Provide flowering plants with organic or mineral fertilizer
- Encourage twice-flowering perennials to flower again by remounting/cutting
- Plant Brussels sprouts and kale
Sunday 22 August 2021 – 14:01:57
For the gardener, the beginning of August means that the days of the official gardening season are numbered and work should now be done before the days get shorter and cooler again in late summer/early autumn. The following gardening is particularly suitable after the full moon calendar in August:
- Carry out propagation by rhizomes on perennials
- Propagate by root division
- Sow/plant spinach and other leafy greens for fall and winter harvest
- One to two days after the start of the full moon, fungus treatment on rose plants
Dienstag, 21. September 2021 – 01:54:41 Uhr
Under the influence of the full moon, a harvest is promising from the crops that were also planted/sown on full moon days. Today is the perfect day for various garden work:
- Harvest tomatoes, courgettes, and vegetables and fruits planted under the full moon – when ripe
- Equip harvested beds with green manure plants (e.g. clover or rapeseed)
- Leaf spinach can be sown/planted again
Wednesday 20 October 2021 – 16:56:40
This day in the full moon calendar should be used for activities in the garden, especially to repeat the work on the full moon at the beginning of the year.
- Mowing the lawn and scarifying/aerating (only if the lawn is dry)
- Carry out weed control one to three days after the beginning of the full moon
- Harvest apples/moon apples
Friday 19 November 2021 – 09:57:27
If it is already freezing and/or snowing at the end of November, no further gardening work will be carried out under the influence of the full moon, unless heat-insulating overwintering measures for outdoor plants are still required. If the temperatures still allow it, the following things make sense:
- Place berry and fruit plants in the garden soil
- Harvest winter vegetables such as savoy cabbage and kale
- Chopping down trees for firewood (better durability and burning properties)
Sunday 19 December 2021 – 05:35:30
If you want to lend a hand in the garden one last time this year and make preparations for the coming season, you can do this with the following work:
- Harvest the leeks and winter leeks as they are particularly tasty on this day
- Plant flower bulbs when the weather is frost-free
More things to know
Fertilize
Under the influence of the full moon, plants are considered to be particularly receptive. Fertilizing dates should therefore not be missing in any gardening planning based on the full moon calendar.
pruning fruit trees
Fruit trees should not be pruned when the moon is full because this has an effect on increased plant sap. As a result, the cuts heal more slowly and the risk of infection, especially fungal infections, is then highest. In addition, the plant sap flows towards the roots from the beginning of the full moon and the supply for the blossom and/or fruit formation could be disturbed by an acceleration. Therefore, the following always applies to fruit trees: do not prune when there is a full moon – the new moon is ideal for this (e.g. Saturday, March 13th and/or Wednesday, October 6th, 2021)
plant grafting
The full moon calendar is an ideal guide, because grafting works best one to three days before the full moon. At this point, the plant sap rises and a growth spurt occurs, which is ideal for grafting.
lawn
By mowing on certain days, the speed of growth can be influenced by the influence of the moon. While the lawn will grow faster after mowing from the new moon up to a maximum of seven days later, lawn growth will be stunted if mowing between the start of the full moon and seven days later.
