The hibiscus
The hibiscus is a genus of plants that belongs to the mallow family. In Germany, the plant is also known as marshmallow. The different Hibiscus species come in different forms:
- trees
- shrubs and subshrubs
- herbaceous plants
The usage
The occurrence of the plants depends on the respective species. These are often used as ornamental plants in gardens or parks. However, specimens of the genus Hibiscus can also be found inside the houses.
In addition, hibiscus tea is also very popular. Individual components of the hibiscus plant are suitable for cooking, while the flowers are said to have a healing effect.
Are hibiscus flowers poisonous?
When used properly, hibiscus is non-toxic. This applies to the entire plant:
- blossoms
- root
- leaves
Adults and pets in particular can safely consume the plants without getting any health problems. Not every part of the flower or fruit tastes really delicious. However, the species of the hibiscus plant are not poisonous, so you can eat them without any problems. In children, excessive consumption can cause health problems due to some of the ingredients in the plants.
Edible hibiscus flowers
Whether the hibiscus flowers are edible or inedible depends on the species. If you choose the right type of plant, you can eat the flowers without any problems. Below are some examples:
Chinese rose mallow (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis)
The Chinese rose mallow is a species of plant that prefers the warmth of the sun. However, you should not place the plant in direct sunlight. The magnificent flowers can be eaten raw. The anti-inflammatory effect makes the species a medicinal plant. The flowering period takes place from June to August.
Shrub marshmallow (Hibiscus syriacus)
The hibiscus is widespread in our region. The flowers can reach a diameter of up to seven centimeters. The shrub marshmallows bloom from July to September. In a warm and humid location, the colors shine pink, blue, purple or white. These are edible raw and cooked. At the same time, the shrub marshmallow is excellent on desserts, so you can eat the decoration without any worries.
Sumpfeibisch (Hibiscus moscheutos)
The marsh marshmallow attracts attention with its large flowers. These can be up to 30 centimeters wide. In a nutrient-rich soil, the plant grows fast and bushy. The appealing blossoms are suitable for embellishing salads, tea and co. The high vitamin C content is another reason to eat the hibiscus blossoms. Between July and October the plants grow up to two meters high.
