Division into plant groups
When it comes to favorable, neutral and unfavorable phases of the moon, not all vegetables are created equal. Since we harvest the tubers that grow underground from the planted potatoes, they count as root vegetables. Therefore, they should ideally be set on what are called root days in the calendar.
Suitable zodiac signs for root vegetables
In the lunar calendar, each day is assigned to a zodiac sign. Choosing the right zodiac sign must also be considered when planting potato tubers. Root days are all days that fall on the following zodiac signs:
- Taurus
- Jungfrau
- Steinbock
The best moon phase for potatoes
There is the waning and waxing moon. The lunar calendar for the garden also names the descending and ascending moon. Incidentally, the two should not be confused and equated. So waning moon is not the same as waning moon. There is also the new moon and full moon . The following applies to potato plants as root vegetables:

Ideal dates for 2021
The lunar calendar promises healthy growth of the potatoes and a rich potato harvest if you plant the tubers on one of the following days:
- March 7th and 8th, waning moon in Capricorn
- April 3-5, waning moon in Capricorn
- May 1st and 2nd, waning moon in Capricorn
- May 10, waning moon in Taurus
- May 28th and 29th, waning moon in Capricorn
The dates in March are well suited for very early potato varieties. Medium and late potato varieties, on the other hand, are better planted in April or May.
Alternate dates on descending days
If you cannot arrange to plant the potatoes on one of the above days, the lunar calendar offers some alternative dates. Although they are in the waxing phase of the moon, since the moon is descending, they can still be described as favorable. In 2021 these are:
- March 26th and 27th, waxing moon in Virgo
- April 23 and 24, waxing moon in Virgo
- May 20th and 21st, waxing moon in Virgo
