Planting strawberries: the ideal distance

The ideal spacing between strawberries is crucial to the success of a cultivation. Too large or too small a planting distance reduces the chances of a rich harvest. Learn more about planting strawberries here.

The right planting distance

The purpose or location of the cultivation is decisive for the correct planting distance between the strawberries. A distinction can be made between the following:

  • garden bed
  • balcony

Im Beet

Most gardeners plant the strawberry plants in their own garden. These get their own bed or thrive in a mixed culture . In many gardens, however, space is scarce. Consequently, it is worth taking a look at the distances between the plant specimens. These depend on the strawberry variety:

  • Strawberry varieties tall: 30-45 cm
  • Strawberry varieties short stature: 20-25 cm
  • Groundcover: about 5 plants per square meter

You should plan a gap of approx. 50-60 cm between the individual rows. Then there is enough space to comfortably care for the strawberries.

On the balcony

In addition to the traditional cultivation in the garden bed, the strawberry plants can also be cultivated on the balcony. Since space is naturally even more limited, you should not waste any space. The following distances vary depending on the mounting method:

  • Planter with large strawberries: 25-30 cm
  • Balcony box with small strawberries: 15-20 cm
  • Hanging strawberries: 25-30 cm
Tip: Fragaria is a sun-loving plant. You should therefore also choose a sunny spot here. The more sun, the better the red fruits taste.

avoid diseases

Too large or too small a distance between the individual specimens of strawberries (Fragaria) is detrimental to growth. If the distances are small, there is a high probability that diseases will jump from one specimen to the next. These are, for example:

  • gray rot
  • Leatherberry Rot
  • Red root rot
  • strawberry powdery mildew
  • vitiligo

In addition, the wind cannot really dry the individual Fragaria specimens. The humid climate favors the development of diseases and promotes the growth of fungi.

Note: To avoid widespread infestation, you should always keep the recommended minimum distances!

make gardening easier

On the other hand, a large distance increases comfort when gardening. Chopping weeds or clearing the beds will not cause any problems if there is an appropriate planting distance between the strawberries. In order to use the potential of your garden, you should not waste too much free space. A middle ground is required when planting the Fragaria.
