Wasp foam and wasp spray against wasps & alternatives

Hardly anyone likes wasps around them. For some people it is even downright dangerous, namely for allergy sufferers. A wasp sting can be fatal. But even if you don’t have an allergic reaction, you don’t want to be bitten. In summer, wasps are quite common, sometimes in the house, often in the garden. It is particularly annoying when eating, but it is precisely then that these troublemakers attack us, attracted by sweets. Here you can find out whether and how wasp sprays and wasp foam help against the troublemakers.

Better relocate

Individual wasps are not so dangerous. It gets bad when the insects appear in masses. Then good advice is often expensive. So what can you do about wasps? There are a few options.

The aim must be not to kill the wasps. This should only be done in exceptional cases, when you cannot get to the nest or when allergy sufferers are threatened and you see no other way out. Relocating is the better way, we’ll get to that later. It’s quick and easy and not dangerous if you follow a few rules.

It is important to remember that wasps are protected. So they really shouldn’t be killed at all. Therefore, for me, relocating is the best way to deal with the problem.

Prevent

You can’t really prevent it. It makes sense to pick up fallen fruit immediately before wasps are attracted. Do not leave sweets out, i.e. no cakes, no ice cream, no sweets and the like. Avoid anything that might attract wasps. However, if you have a nest nearby, none of this helps. Then you can only prevent stitches.

  • Don’t make any sudden movements.
  • cover food
  • cover drinks
  • Before eating or drinking, always check that there is no wasp on or in it
  • Do not use perfumes or scented creams
  • No hairspray
  • No bright and colorful clothing

Waspschaum

Wasp foam is used to completely close the wasp nest in the shortest possible time. No wasp can get out anymore. In addition, the foam contains one or more insecticides so that the wasps die quickly. The foam collapses quite quickly, but usually only after the insects are already very weak and can no longer attack. Most of the remedies are certified as very good or good effectiveness.

application

  • The best times to apply are early morning or late evening. Then the wasps are in their burrow. Due to the coolness at this time, the insects are calmer and no longer move much.
  • It is important to keep a safety distance of about 2 meters.
  • Protective clothing is ideal, so you can be sure not to get bitten.
  • Spray the foam directly onto and into the approach area and around the nest until it is completely encased in foam.
  • If the nest is housed in a cavity and can only be reached through a narrow opening, the foam is sprayed inside through a tube. The escape route must be completely closed.
  • Do not remove the nest immediately, but wait about a day. Returning wasps fly into the nest and die as well.

Spruzit insect foam Neudorff

  • Active ingredient: pyrethrins
  • 300 ml from 20 euros
  • I haven’t figured out what justifies the high price (compared to the other foams)

Explanations

  • Pyrethrine – Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium extract – obtained from chrysanthemums, largely natural remedy
  • d-Phenothrin – a synthetic drug based on the natural drug pyrethrum, quickly acting, rarely causing acute poisoning in humans
  • Tetramethrin – chemical compound from the group of pyrethroids
  • PBO – piperonyl butoxide – enhances the effect of other substances, not an insecticide itself, inhibits detoxification in the insect body, quite harmless to humans

wasp spray

The individual wasps are sprayed with wasp sprays. Of course, one should not spray when the insects are sitting on people or sensitive surfaces. You can also spray directly into the wasp nest. The poison affects the nervous system of insects.

application

  • Your own protection is also the top priority here
  • Fight the nest in the morning and evening hours
  • Always position it in such a way that the spray does not get caught in the wind
  • If possible, do not breathe!
  • Maintain a safe distance
  • Spray directly into the nest opening and then mist everything around the nest

  • Deltamethrin – synthetic pyrethroid, probably also toxic to bees
  • p-Menthane-3,8-diol – herbal active ingredient, used as a repellent = deterrent, can provide protection for several hours, can be obtained from the distillation residues of essential lemon eucalyptus, but is nowadays mostly chemically synthesized.

alternatives

There are some alternatives to wasp foam and wasp spray. I find the wasp nest dummy ideal. You can hang them anywhere. This will scare off other wasps. When not in use, i.e. in winter, the dummy can be folded up and stored to save space.

Have a professional remove the wasp nest

If you don’t trust yourself or if you can’t reach the nest, you can ask experts for help. Some do it for free, some get paid. But asking definitely doesn’t cost anything.

  • Beekeepers often help with the removal or relocation of a wasp nest. If not, they usually at least lend their equipment, i.e. a beekeeper suit with which you can remove the nest yourself without getting stung.
  • The fire brigade can (but does not have to) help with high-hanging nests.
  • The pest controller is the specialist for wasp nests. Depending on the location and size of the nest, you have to reckon with costs between 50 and 150 euros.

home remedies

There are many home remedies for wasps. Many are directed against the sensitive olfactory systems of insects. However, they are not without side effects for our noses either. The smell of ammonia on the coffee table would not be my thing. Everyone has to find out for themselves what works and what doesn’t.

  • Cloths soaked in sal ammoniac
  • Smoking with coffee powder
  • Lemon studded with cloves
  • Essential fragrance oils
  • Freshly cut garlic cloves
  • Fly screens prevent people from entering houses
  • incense sticks
  • Wasp Traps – Bottles with small openings lightly filled with beer and sugar. A little detergent in the liquid takes away the surface tension. The wasps drown quite quickly.

relocate wasps

Instead of using wasp foam, resettlement can be carried out. But only if you can get to the nest easily. It is best to have this done by a professional. It first sucks off the outside of the individual animals and then removes the nest. Together, everyone is taken to a new place. However, it is not easy to find a helper. Since the helpful professionals are often approached by many people, they don’t have the time to take care of everything. I’ve even read that some thought wasps weren’t worth relocating. That would be like relocating aphids and nobody would think of it. Yes, opinions differ. The hardest part about resettlement is finding suitable new quarters. After all, hanging the nest somewhere in nature is not a solution. I’m still for the version with the professional. He knows his stuff.

UV light traps

These traps are pesticide-free, which is a plus, but they’re banned outdoors because they attract other insects as well. So they can only be used inside. UV light attracts the insects, which are then killed by electricity or tape. For wasps I find these traps overkill. Not so many animals stray into the house that such a trap would be worthwhile.

Special case earth wasps

Earth wasps build their nests in the ground. It is usually the common wasps that build their burrow in gardens and court a queen there. They use cavities in the ground, very fond of burrows made by voles. Earth peoples are often significantly more aggressive than other wasps. Stepping on a nest can have nasty consequences. Therefore, it should first be locked so that no one can step on it. If you want to relocate these wasps, you can only do so in a beekeeper’s suit. It is better to let an expert take over the task.

Otherwise earth wasps can be smoked out. There are special sprays available on the market for this purpose. This is how the insects are killed. I would advise against the method of pouring sugar water into the aisles at night so that the wings stick together. This is torture. If so, then a quick end.

Since wasps only live for one summer, you should consider not living with the animals after all. Only the queen survives the winter and she can easily be relocated.

Conclusion
If wasps cannot be resettled, wasp foam and wasp spray are very reliable means of getting rid of the insects. I noticed the quite clear price differences in the funds. I have no explanations for this. Less in it, but higher price, no idea why, but I’m not an expert either. This is probably for anyone who thinks good things have to come at a price. I find the funds expensive anyway, and also unhealthy, so not really something for me. But sometimes there is no other way. I have repeatedly read that wasps have settled in the roller shutter box. There’s no other way to get them out. Then it has to be, but otherwise I’m in favor of relocating.
